WA: Miners to protest against Rio Tinto at AGM

PERTH, April 30 AAP - Australian, American and Canadian coal miners will protest againstRio Tinto at the mining giant's annual general meeting in Perth tomorrow.

The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) said the protest - outsideRio's headquarters and from the floor of the AGM - would be part of global union actionagainst Rio Tinto.

The CFMEU said the company was moving to evict 16 "victimised" Blair Athol coal minersand their families from their homes in Clermont in central Queensland while the men wereawaiting a commission ruling on future jobs.

Union general president Tony Maher said the eviction move came just weeks after RioTinto announced that its chairman Sir Robert Wilson would pocket a $40.4 million retirementpayout.

"This is the ruthless and ugly face of corporate greed and it should not be toleratedin a country like Australia," Mr Maher said in a statement.

He said steel and mining workers from the US and Canada would join Australian coalminers on the floor at the company's AGM tomorrow to directly challenge the chairman anddirectors on Rio Tinto's corporate record.

The delegation would be led by CFMEU national secretary John Maitland, who is alsopresident of the International Chemical Energy Mining and General Workers Federation,to which the US and Canadian workers are affiliated.

Mr Maitland said Rio Tinto was abusing workers in Australia, and those at its operationsin North America.

Comment was being sought from Rio Tinto.
